How do I say this without it hurting?
I don't know what love is
I've never felt it
How do I know I've never felt love?
It's something you just know
I'm obsessive, sure, and I cling to an idea
But I've never had a deep emotional attachment
I know you'd like to believe that I love you
And to some extent, I do,
But I can never give you the things you want
Because I'm not sure I have them to give

Those who give their hearts
Are destined for heartache
While those whose hearts are stolen
Fall helplessly into love
Like lemmings from a cliff
Love is blind, so you can't set your sights on it
It cannot be pinpointed
It cannot be forced
You can't make it happen through force of will
And you can't change a person's heart
Every man, woman, and androgyne* born
Has a name written on their heart
And if that's not you, there isn't anything you can do
Love is a predator
It lies in ambush and springs when least expected
Love never gives you a choice
And once you fall prey, you're in it for the long haul
For better or for worse, till death do you part

Looking at the way I feel about love
It's not hard to see why I feel that I've never been in love
And why I say I can never be what you want me to be
It's just not in my nature
I'm always looking for love
So it never has a chance to spring
I've always given my heart
So it's never had a chance to be stolen
And I'm just not sure
That it's your name that's written on my heart.
*The word "androgyne", in this context, refers to the alternate sexes, such as transgendered, transsexual, hermaphroditic, androgynous, and asexual in a concise way.

This poem is pretty self-explanatory. It's a first-person POV piece in which the character is telling someone they're close to that they don't love them. It's very realistic, granted, but not based in reality on my part. It was just a concept I wanted to play with: an Anti-Love poem to counter the traditional Love poem, for those of us who dislike the commerciality of Valentine's Day.
